Reflections on Ascend2020

4/10/2018

Picture
When I was younger, I played the game "Never Have I Ever."

I think back on that time wondering where the time has

passed and reflecting on my accomplishments. I can easily

say today that "Never Have I Ever" been so enriched by a

group of motivated and intelligent thought leaders as I was

with my Ascend2020 collective. From the emotional

thoughtfulness of our resident psychologist to the solidly

build wisdom from a construction sage, I learned not just

about how to structure my life for entrepreneurship but I

I also was able to get sound insights for work life balance.

Perhaps, though, what I gained mostly through this

experience is the elevating power of networks, the

strength of carbon-chain learning, and the individual beauty

and perspective that each of us can manifest when provided

the platform. Business owners of not, we all bring unique

gifts to the table of life; there is a seat at this table for

everyone. Let us remember to create spaces for people to

shine and show value, regardless of sex, race, or

physical ability and pause long enough to bathe in

each other's glow. This is the true essence of ascension.

To the programers on #Ascend2020 - thank you for

for bringing this to life.

Poppin’ in DC

Showing a commitment to the source, Founder, Candy

Schibli, details the integral nature of social responsibility

when selecting coffee. A graduate school educational

excursion brought Candy to Costa Rica to delve into the

layered historical significance of coffee as a food, export,

and livelihood for international growers. In a recent Popville

article
, Prince of Petworth spotlighted Southeastern Roastery

for its impact as a women-owned, operated, and empowered brand devoted to sustainability

straight from the source. With this in mind, meet Candy at Songbyrd Music House & Record Cafe.

Coffee tastings are held the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 8-11 a.m. at the Adams Morgan

community staple. Coffee is sold daily by the cup and whole bean by the bag. Additionally, Rachel

Pace, Owner of Penny Brew, has signed on as a wholesale customer powered by Southeastern

Roastery. Penny Brew believes in the concept that “two people are better than one - more is

accomplished by working together”. The paths have now aligned for two black women with

engineering degrees and a passion for coffee. Lay the foundation. Build together.

Cupping with Culture

5/25/2017

Picture

May 21, 2017 marked Southeastern Roastery's 1st cupping at Culture

Coffee
in the Brightwood neighborhood of D.C.! This also marked

the roll-out of the new 12 oz and 1 lb bags and the tasting

of Southeastern Roastery's first batches of dark roast. As a

high-five to women in coffee, this cupping was held at an all

women's owned coffee shop and featured coffees from the

women lead Keitara cooperative in Sumatra. A big, huge bear-hug

for everyone that came out to taste, celebrate, and provide

feedback! Southeastern Roastery loves and appreciates you dearly. Cheers to many more cupping

and all of the women through the industry that make the coffee engine prrr!

Virginia International Tattoo

5/7/2017

Picture
May 29, 2017, Southeastern Roastery participated as a vendor

in the Virginia International Tattoo. Though sounding like a tattoo

artist or art convention, the tattoo is a military inspired drum and

pipe band festival held in multiple locations throughout the world.

What a pleasure it was to attend and a new experience! Part of

my pleasure in roasting is to share new flavors and experiences.

Thankfully the day was as expected...hot =). And the Pacas cold

brew from El Salvador fit in perfectly, providing a traditional

coffee flavor in a cool refreshing format.

Thanks to the volunteers for putting this beautiful event together.

Collectivity for Justice

2/6/2017

Picture
Southeastern Roastery is linking with the National Cannabis

Festival on April 22, 2017
to bring awareness to advocacy

leading the charge for more just legal reform of US drug

laws both at the national and state levels. According to the

ACLU, 8.2 million marijuana arrests occurred between 2001

and 2010. Nationwide arrest data revealed 1 overarching

trend - a significant racial bias in arrests. Southeastern

Roastery strongly believes that injustice and bias in the

legal system anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

In the spirit of justice, Southeastern Roastery looks forward

to joining the National Cannabis Festival and its advocates to

offer its roasts in a warm communal space where attendees

can discuss paths to positive change in US drug policy.

I hope you join us for coffee, music and advocacy!

Behind the design

1/13/2017

Picture
A number of people have asked me, What does the logo

mean? It's a curious question because looking back,

its foundation is on conversations with the artist,

Antonio Hardy. Our talks about the ideas and

values of using coffee roasting as a conduit for

creating atmospheres for community engagement,

positive collectivity and communication grew naturally.

From this, Antonio transformed these words into

beauty ( #blackmanmagic ). To me, art is open for

interpretation. My interpretation of  Antonio's art for the

roastery is such - The triangle visualizes economic, social,

and environmental sustainabilty; the butterfly - growth,

and the galaxy - limitless positive potential.
